FURTHER INFORMATION

ACCOMMODATION

The nearest hotel to Iron is the Hotel de Guise, 103 place Lestur, Guise (tel: 03 23 61 17 58).  Reports on the standard of accommodation are mixed.  On the other hand, many of the international hotel chains are well represented in St. Quentin, about 25 kilometres from Guise.  St Quentin is on the A26 auto-route, with direct links to the Channel ports, and on the A29 to Amiens.  See: http://www.tripadvisor.fr/ for reports on the hotels in St. Quentin.

FOOD

There is nothing in Iron and, as is usual in France, many restaurants and brasseries are closed on Saturday lunchtime.  However the following should be open in Guise on the day of the inauguration

Hotel de Guise, 103 place Lesur, Guise (tel: 03 23 61 17 58).  North African and local dishes.  The couscous is excellent.

Le Jardin, 50 rue Alfred Chollet, Guise (tel: 03 23 07 96 42).  Traditional French cuisine.

Les Délices Guisards, 35 rue Camille Desmoulins (tel : 03 23 61 42 83).  Crêpes, salads, grills and local specialities.

In addition there are many fast food outlets, bars and cafés in the town.  If you prefer to make your own picnic then there is a small Carrefour in the Rue Sadi Carnot, near the centre of Guise.

CAR PARKING

Guise: Disc parking (2 hours) on the Place des Armes; ample free parking on the Place Lesur and at the St. Médard Cemetery.  Access to the main gate of the Château is difficult and space is limited.  Parking there should not be attempted.

Iron: Ample kerbside and off-road parking in the village.  Parking may be possible on the site of the Logez mill, now the Cerena Agricultural Supplies Depot, 28 rue de Hannappes, 02510, Iron.

ACCESS FOR PEOPLE WITH RESTRICTED MOBILITY

Access to the execution site in the Chateau could be difficult.  Contact me for further details of alternative approaches.

WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO SEE?

GUISE (LA DESOLATION) FRENCH NATIONAL CEMETERY, FLAVIGNY-LE-PETIT.  About 4 kilometres south of Guise, near the site of a famous battle between the French and Germans in late August 1914.  Mixed nationalities with German, French and British dead.  Points of interest include special markers on headstones for Belgians serving in the French army, and private headstones for two German pilots.

LE FAMILISTÉRE GODIN.  Just off Guise Town centre.  It is the French counterpart of Saltaire, Port Sunlight and Bournville, where Godin, a local industrialist, realized his vision of a self contained community of workers and their families living next to the factory.  The Familistére contains shops, laundries, houses – even a theatre.

ETREUX.  About 4 kilometres north of Iron, the scene of where, on 27 August 1914, the Royal Munster Fusiliers made their stand against 6 German regiments in what has been termed ‘an Irish Thermopylae’.  The CWGC cemetery is situated about 1 kilometre to the north of Etreux on the D946 road to Landrecies, on the site of the orchard where the remnants of the RMF finally surrendered.  Also the Communal Cemetery, rue du Cimitière, which contains the grave of Private George Lay of the Royal Berkshire Regiment who was taken in by the villagers of Etreux, betrayed, and shot by the Germans in 1915.  Note the commemorative plaques on the buildings adjacent to the Town Hall commemorating the burning by the Germans in 1915 of the buildings which used to stand on this site.  Property burning was part of the standard punishment administered by the Germans against those who had sheltered allied soldiers on the run.

GUISE CHATEAU.  The seat of the Dukes of Guise, and a powerful noble French family in the middle ages.  One of their number, Mary of Guise, was the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots.
